This past Sunday the Kansas City Chiefs played the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. This year the Super Bowl was held at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, LA. This is the second time these teams have faced off in the most watched game of the year. Back in 2023, the teams first met each other at the State Farm Stadium in Arizona. The Eagles put up a good fight by keeping neck and neck with the Chiefs most of the game. By the end, the Chiefs beat the Eagles with a final score of 38-35. Fans of each team were prepared to root for their guys in this 2025 rematch.
Both teams have been to the Super Bowl numerous times before. The Kansas City Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl 6 times and won 4 times, giving them a record of 4-2. 3 of the 4 wins have been within the last decade. They beat the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 and 2024 and, as previously stated, the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. The Philadelphia Eagles have been to the Super Bowl 5 times but have only won once, giving them a comparable record of 1-4.
Prior to the game start, Jon Batiste took to a piano on the 50-yard line to perform our national anthem. Per usual, the game began with a coin flip. The Chiefs called for tails and got the ball to start off the game. Throughout the first quarter, the Eagles took two touchdowns; however, one was dismissed. The Eagles got the field goal to make the score 7-0 by the end of the first quarter. Moving into the second quarter, Jake Elliot scored a field goal for the Eagles with 8:38 left on the clock, bringing the score to 10-0. Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean ran a 38-yard interception to a touchdown with 7:03 remaining. This touchdown took the score to 17-0. Nearing the end of the first half, the Eagles scored yet another touchdown and took the score up to 24-0 for the end of the first half.
After a very one-sided first half, the game went into a much-needed halftime. While both teams were resting, hydrating, and thinking about new game plans, Kendrick Lamar took to the field as the 2025 halftime performer. He performed some of his top hits like Be Humble, DNA, squabble up, and tv off. Lamar also brought award-winning singer SZA onto the stage with him. The two sang songs from Lamar’s newest album GNZ together as well as their 2018 hit All the Stars. Lamar brought his Grammy-winning hit Not Like Us to the field after teasing it through the majority of his performance.
After Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s halftime performance, the Chiefs and Eagles returned to the field for the second half of the game. With an almost uneventful third quarter, Elliot scored another field goal, taking the Eagles to a further 27-0. With 2:40 remaining in the quarter, DeVonta Smith brought the Eagles closer to a win with another touchdown. This pushed to a further 34-0. Finally, with 0:34 left in the quarter, Xavier Worthy scored a touchdown for the Kansas City Chiefs. With this touchdown, the Chiefs brought the score to 34-6. Continuing into the fourth quarter, the Eagles were not backing down. Jake Elliot scored another two field goals, taking the score to 40-6. The Chiefs were trying to make a comeback in the last stretch of the game. DeAndre Hopkins scored a second touchdown for Kansas City, taking the score up to 40-14. Xavier Worthy takes another 50-yard touchdown for the Chiefs, again making a comeback of 40-20. Taking this rematch all the way to a powerful end, the Philadelphia Eagles took home a well-deserved win in Super Bowl LIX with a final score of 40-22. Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts, told Erin Andrews, “The good, the bad, all of it, using it as fuel to pursue my own greatness. I couldn’t do any of these things without the guys around me.”
