HERNANDO, Miss. — A new tradition took shape at Hernando High School as seniors gathered for the school’s first annual Senior Field Day on Friday, May 8, bringing competition, energy and lasting memories to campus.
Held from 12 to 2 p.m. immediately following cap and gown pickup, the event highlighted how a new school year can introduce new traditions, giving seniors one last chance to connect before graduation.
Students were divided into nine teams, each represented by a color: blue, black, orange, white, pink, red, yellow, purple and green. Team captains were selected by class sponsor Emerson Sorrells, adding leadership and organization to the event.
The afternoon featured a series of competitive games, including hula hoop challenges, tug-of-war, water balloon toss, water relay races and three-legged races. The activities tested teamwork, communication and endurance while keeping the atmosphere fun and light.
Hydration and food were provided throughout the event, with water and Gatorade available for students. Domino’s pizza was served, and a snow cone truck offered an extra treat as temperatures rose. After the competitions concluded, students enjoyed water slides and a bouncy house obstacle course, turning the event into a full-on celebration.
The pink team emerged as the overall winner, surprising even its own members.
“It felt so good to be with a team that wants to win, but also made it fun at the same time,” said Loryn Rhodes, a senior on the pink team. “My favorite part of field day has to be the tug-of-war. I was actually very shocked that we won, but it just shows how much our team put into it. And something that I will miss about high school definitely has to be the people who made the school fun and the friendships that I’ve made.”
Beyond the competition, the event served as a reminder of the importance of community and connection during senior year. With laughter, teamwork and shared experiences, the first Senior Field Day set the tone for what could become a lasting tradition at Hernando High School.
