From January 26, 2026, to February 8, 2026, schools in the Desoto County district were closed due to harsh and icy weather. Because of this same weather, the state of Mississippi entered what is known as a “state of emergency”; basically, this gives the government more freedom in decision making when placed under difficult circumstances outside of their control. It’s commonly believed when a state enters a state of emergency that means no missed school has to be made up, but this is misinformation. If a scheduled holiday is declared as a potential makeup day ahead of time, then this date can be used as a make up day, no matter if the state declares a state of emergency.

President’s day, a no school holiday, is one of these potential makeup days. All Desoto County schools will be attending school on February 16, 2026, otherwise known as President’s Day, as if it were any other school day. Bell schedule will be the same as any other normal day; this includes both arrival and dismissal.

As of right now, no other days have been assigned as make up days, but March 29 (Easter break), May 26, 27, and 28 can possibly become make up days as well. If this is the case, the day will go on as any other school day, just like President’s day.

Additionally, the third nine weeks has been pushed back. The third nine weeks will now end on March 20, which also marks the beginning of the fourth, or final, nine weeks. Please pay attention to your schedules so that you are aware what class you are meant to be reporting to on March 20.
