Being a student-athlete comes with many challenges, both on and off the court. Student-athletes often experience stress while balancing academics and athletics. Many have shared how they manage schoolwork alongside sports, with approaches ranging from staying ahead on assignments to prioritizing responsibilities.
Senior Molly Anderson said student-athletes must remember that education comes first, even when balancing demanding schedules.
“Sometimes it is hard to manage both, but you have to remember that at some point sports will end, and your education will take you very far. Being organized, responsible and getting things done is very important.”
Freshman Jaylin Hemphill, who runs cross country and manages the tennis team, said balance and discipline are key to handling both academics and athletics.
“Honestly, handling both sports and academics is all about balance and staying disciplined. My schedule stays busy, so I’ve learned to use my time wisely.”
Hemphill also said finding time for faith and managing multiple responsibilities has helped him stay organized and keep his priorities straight. As a student-athlete, maintaining good grades is essential to remaining eligible to compete.
Junior Gemma Walker, a basketball player for Hernando, said communication with teachers helps her stay on top of her schoolwork, especially during the season.
“Staying on top of my work in the classroom and communicating with my teachers is important because sometimes we have to leave class early.”
Sophomore football player Kason Stafford said completing schoolwork first is essential before focusing on athletics. Noxx Siaz added that staying focused and turning in assignments on time helps him succeed in both areas.
“Just doing my work on time and staying focused.”
Siaz said once schoolwork is completed, athletes can then shift their attention to sports.
Freshmen Maison Good, a football player, and Cole Garland, a wrestler, both said paying attention in class helps them stay caught up. Garland said staying focused in the classroom makes a difference.
“I just pay attention and do all my work.”
Overall, these student-athletes work hard every day to meet expectations in the classroom and in competition, and their dedication continues to inspire others to pursue their goals.
