The art show run by the National Art Society took place on December 6, 2025 in the High School Commons. This art show displayed many different kinds of art, some of this art being completed by advanced placement (AP) art students. The AP Art classes consist of: AP 2D, AP 3D, and AP drawing. These classes are split between both Hernando High art teachers, Katherine Wright and Erin James. Ms. Wright is over the AP 2D art class, the art pieces that are created in this class are typically drawings or paintings. Ms. James, who is over the AP 3D art class, has projects that vary from being made of wood to be being made of clay. These classes require a student to have taken the Art 1 and Art 2 classes, and a recommendation from either Ms. Wright or Ms. James.
In these AP classes, students are self-directed, meaning that they come up with their own concepts and themes for their artwork, explains Ms. Wright. Wright describes herself as more of an advisor in this class than teacher, due to the fact her AP art students do most of their thinking and work on their own.
Once in one of these three classes, students work on and towards their art portfolio to send to college boards in the future. These art portfolios are meant to a collection of a student’s best quality art. These portfolios are submitted to college boards and then scored on a scale of 0-5. Sixes are very rare (and possible), and highly impressive. “Sixes are very rare. Most people get fours or fives. The average score is three.” Shares Ms. James, adding that they strive for a score of three or up. For art schools, a student’s art portfolio is very important for showing off a student’s potential and their score for their art.
Taking these AP art classes can help a student that is aiming for a future in art reach their goals, especially when it comes to their art portfolio. These art classes are for students that are passionate and determined when it comes to art.
