The United States Air Force was established in 1947 as a separate branch from its original placement in the Army and has been active for over 78 years.
The Air Force of the United States is one of the largest air forces in the world, with more than 320,000 personnel active. The Air Force states that their mission is to,
“Fight and win – airpower anytime, anywhere. Whether full time, part time, volunteer, in or out of uniform, everyone who serves plays a critical role in helping us achieve mission success.”
They serve functions such as air superiority, global strike, rapid global mobility, ISR, and command & control, operating about 5,500 aircrafts and handling approximately 400 Intercontinental Ballistic.
Diving more specifically into its history, the Air Force began as a branch in the Army’s division, in 1907, later on they evolved into the Air Service and Army Air Corps and even the AAF during WWII before becoming what we know today as the U.S. Air Force. They finalized this with a signing of the National Security Act which officially established it as equal to both the Army and Navy in 1947. The Air Force describes this shift of importance in WWII on their website as,
“one of the greatest evolutions in warfare-tactics technology, soon putting the U.S. in the lead…became a leading superpower.”
The Air Force also has multiple leadership branches such as Air Staff, AF Secretariat, Major Commands, and Senior leaders. Right now the senior leaders are Dr. Troy E. Meink who is the 27th Secretary to the Air Force, Matthew L. Lohmeier who is 29th Under Secretary of the Air Force, General Kenneth S. Wilsbach who is the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David R. Wolfe who is the 21st Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force.
The U.S. Air Forces’ culture centers around it’s core values, like Integrity, Service before Self, and Excellence. It also highlights things like respect, teamwork, and professionalism. They express courtesy in the things they do, for example they stress saluting and honoring the flag, and honoring the fallen with Taps. The Air Forces’ official website states.

The Air Force also has many traditions like 100-Mission Traditions which are elaborate celebrations for pilots completing 100 combat missions, a Dollar Ride which is a flight tradition where a dollar bill is passed around for everyone to sign after a first solo Space-A flight, and a Ring Dance and 100’s Night which is a celebration for cadet milestones and class ring presentations.
