The recently renovated pickleball and tennis courts in Hernando have become a popular gathering spot for Hernando High School students, offering them an ideal place to unwind, practice their skills, and enjoy time with friends. The updated courts have breathed new life into the area, providing a space where both athletes and casual players can enjoy the outdoors and stay active.
For many students, the courts have become a go-to hang out spot after school. Kyle Kicker, a junior at Hernando High School, is one of the many students who regularly visits the courts to play tennis and pickleball. According to Kicker, the courts offer the perfect setting for hanging out and competition.
“I really like playing pickleball, but mostly tennis,” Kicker said. “It’s especially fun at night when the streetlights come on, and I get to play with my friends. The courts are also a great place for anyone on the tennis team to get extra practice. It helps us stay sharp and work on our game.”
Kicker isn’t alone in his appreciation for the new courts. The city’s recent updates, which included adding dedicated pickleball lines to the tennis courts, have expanded opportunities for students to try something new. Nathan Jenkins, a sophomore at Hernando High, said the changes have made a noticeable difference in the overall experience for everyone.
“I enjoy spending time with my girlfriend and playing pickleball with her,” Jenkins said. “I like that the city added pickleball lines. It makes it easy for anyone to show up and start a game. Whether you’re playing tennis or pickleball, it’s just a fun way to hang out and stay active.”
These improvements have also brought more people to the courts. What used to be just a place for tennis matches is now a lively spot for a variety of activities. Pickleball, a sport that has gained popularity in recent years, is now one of the main attractions, thanks to the newly added lines. This has drawn in students of all skill levels, from seasoned players to newbies looking to try something different.
While the students appreciate the upgraded courts, local residents have also noticed the positive impact the facility has had on the community. Ethan Willis, an FCA leader and longtime Hernando resident, has observed how the courts have become a place where students can connect and stay active.
“It’s great to see the students using these courts,” Willis said. “They’ve become a real gathering spot, and it’s a positive way for young people to spend their time. These courts are great for athletes, but they’re also a place for everyone to have fun. Whether they’re playing competitively or just goofing around with friends, it brings a lot of energy to the Mexican restaurant across from it, La Siesta.”
With the combination of updated facilities, increased community engagement, and growing interest in both pickleball and tennis, the Hernando courts are sure to stay a key part of the community for years to come.
