Josephine D. Rose is a teacher, a writer, and a follower of God, so lets talk about her!
I first met Rose during a Bible Study over the summer with her book “Talking to God”. Over the eight weeks I heard her words, her wisdom, and her faith. I couldn’t believe that there wasn’t a crowd of girls outside the door where we met every week, because the more you get to know Miss Rose you realize how remarkable she is.
Her book “Talking to God” was released on April 2025 after Lifeway Christian Resources approached her to work with them. At the time, Miss Rose was bedridden after a series of seizures. Though her health limited what she could do, she could still do something she loved, writing.
But her journey didn’t start here, so lets go back.
Miss Rose grew up attending church but she didn’t truly have an understanding of God, especially from her home life. In an interview she said to me, “So my journey with God, I grew up in a very, I would say, nominal Christian type of environment. So I went to church. I heard about God…in my home, I would go home and it would be abusive, so it would be confusing.”. She didn’t have a true understanding of God yet since she had a confusing idea of Him and couldn’t with her combination of hard home life and instability.
In high school, Miss Rose heard the Gospel through a college student who brought her to church and gave Miss Rose her first Bible. During this time Miss Rose also met a Youth Pastor named Miss Sharon, she stated,”I would say the prayer and think, ‘Okay, now I’m in’, but I still didn’t understand, but I was introduced to the love of God, and so I professed Christ that whole time, though I didn’t really know him.”.
During her college years, Miss Rose told me that she joined a small church where she saw genuine faith truly practiced, “But these people knew God. They had prayer meetings before service, and they talked to God like they knew him, like they had a real relationship. And I thought, I have all this knowledge, but I don’t have that.”. Miss Rose realized she wanted what all those people had, that she wanted to fully trust God and be saved by him.
After Miss Rose’s salvation and riding on that high of being in a genuine relationship with God she fell sick for seven years after suffering 28 seizures, she stated, “I had to move home, had to sell my car, had to quit seminary, had to quit my job, and I had been living a very fast life, so when I stopped and was in bed, I thought, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”. In the season of that darkness and days of prayer, she began writing a blog and got to reached out to about what would eventually become, “Talking to God”.
Miss Rose stated that she has always been a writer, beginning with journaling during her early years to process her thoughts. Professors encouraged her to continue writing, and the habit became something more.
Right now you can be looking forward to Miss Rose’s upcoming book, though it does not yet have a title or release date. At the moment we do have the gist of it. Miss Rose remarked, “I think sometimes in the Christian life, we struggle with continuing on when things are hard…but Scripture tells us to run away with endurance. And all throughout Scripture, we see the believers continuing on even when it was hard, and we see Jesus continuing even on the cross.”. She continued on to say that at first she was hesitant to write about this since she’d have to practice it herself and she wasn’t sure if she truly could, but then she told me she realized, “I’m already enduring, we’re all enduring. And the thing that’s been helping me to endure is where I’m going…we’re all pilgrims walking home. And so our endurance will end and the hope is home.”.
When asking about her plans for the future, Miss Rose replied, “I think I would love to continue writing so to write more books, and love to continue to speak.”. She explained to me that while she does have things she would like to do she is also aware that God may have other plans.
She also spoke with gratitude to about her adoptive mother, who has helped lead her on her path and show to look to God through prayer, and a woman named Misty Snyder who showed her integrity and how to live graciously through her quiet life of devotion.
Looking ahead, Miss Rose will release a podcast and article with Still Her Bible about prayer. In December she will be doing breakout sessions at Story and Soul Retreat in Memphis and also leading a devotional quiet time for the same retreat.
