On August 26th, superstar Taylor Swift broke the internet with a post on Instagram announcing her engagement to her partner, Travis Kelce, a football tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
With photos depicting both the engagement and the two holding each other surrounded by flowers and a beautiful ring, the post had millions of likes within just a few hours and countless reposts.
After two years and countless public sightings at both tour dates and football events, the internet’s most talked-about couple finally announced a lifetime together. Family, friends, and fans could not have been more excited.
Along with the countless support from fans and the media, many celebrities were thrilled with the announcement. From Kelce’s teammates, Swift’s fellow pop stars, and even President Trump, global icons hope the two have a happy life together.
“…a lot of luck. I think he’s a great player. A great guy. And I think he’s a terrific person,” Trump stated during a conference.
Kelce’s team declared, “…today is a fairy tale.”
But how did the global pop star and professional football player meet?
It is safe to say the couple’s story sounds like something “So High School.”
In an episode of “New Heights”, a podcast co-hosted by both Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce, Swift discussed their meeting and how they became the world’s most talked-about couple.
She told listeners that the podcast was actually how she first learned of Kelce because he would “gush” over her and discuss the fact that he did not get to meet her on her iconic Eras Tour.
On said tour Kelce assumed his status as an NFL player would earn him a one-way ticket to meet Swift, but instead, he only got to discuss wanting her phone number over the podcast with his brother.
It was not until Swift’s family and friends got involved that she decided to give Kelce a chance.
“My relatives, my cousins, were like, ‘Please, please, please, he’s amazing’,” she said on the show. “There were friends that were like, ‘He’s actually an amazing guy, he’s so great’. There were a lot of people whispering in my ear about you.”
Swift gave Kelce a chance, saying he was “…exactly what she wrote songs about.”
And with that, the couple stepped into the public eye and have been the media’s favorite pair ever since.
“It was wild, but it worked… He’s the good kind of crazy,” Swift said on the show about Kelce, “a human exclamation point.”
Kelce even made an appearance in Swift’s Eras Tour, being part of the bit performed before she sings, “I can do it with a Broken Heart.” Viewers were ecstatic over this public display of their relationship.
With their ongoing love story, fans figured out several love songs written by Swift about her and Kelce’s relationship. Some of these include “The Alchemy” and “So High School” off her most recent album, The Tortured Poet’s Department.
