A new queen has been crowned at Hernando High School. On Friday, September 27th, Sophia Mashke was announced as homecoming queen for the 2024 school year. Staff writer, Livi Lucado, sat down with Sophia to discuss life at school and what it means to be the newly crowned queen.
Livi: What clubs are you currently in?
Sophia: “I’m on student council, and I’m the executive vice president, so the vice president of the student body, and then I’m in NHS. I’m president of NHS. I am on the executive council for interact, I’m in key club, and I’m in spirit club, I do diamond girls. I’m in a bunch of honor societies too, so yeah. Pretty involved. It’s pretty fun.’
Livi: That’s so cool, so how long have you been going to Hernando Schools?
Sophia: Hernando schools? My whole life.
Livi: What was your favorite dress up day this homecoming week?
Sophia: I think my favorite dress up day was the game of life day, me and my friend dressed up as soccer moms.”
Livi: Why did you want to join the court?
Sophia: “I love our school so much. I love homecoming so much. It’s such a fun time of year, I’ve done it my sophomore and junior year as well, so that was pretty fun getting to do it with those girls, and we had a great court this year. It’s always so much fun. It’s a great time.”
Livi: I think it’s so much fun watching y’all too, you all look so pretty, so do you like getting dressed up?
Sophia: “Yes that’ so much fun too, we get to get a bunch of pretty dresses, I love the formal dress too.”
Livi: Once you’re on the court, what do you do to prepare?
Sophia: “I mean we have to get our different dresses because this year we had senior maid brunch, which was pretty fun. So you have to get a bunch of different dresses for that, and for the night of, you have to get hair and makeup appointments, but it’s pretty chill.”
Livi: What does it mean to be part of the homecoming court?
Sophia: “…So you’re a really good representation of your class as a whole, that you’re a kind person, that you’re involved. It’s a pretty big honor to be on the court in general. It’s a lot of fun.
Livi: When you were announced as queen, how did you feel?
Sophia: “Very excited, of course. Super honored. It’s just, it was so.. so very shocking, like it was so much. I’m very happy that the high school, that the student body decided that I was the one that they wanted to represent for that.”
Livi: Do you have any advice for underclassmen?
Sophia: “I think one of the biggest pieces of advice that I could give to underclassmen, anyone coming into high school, would to just be kind. Kindness doesn’t cost you anything. I think that it’s one of the most important attributes to practice in your everyday life, and I think it’s very important to be kind in your everyday life.
We at the Golden Report want to thank Sophia for taking the time to sit down with us. Congratulations on being crown Hernando High School’s new Homecoming Queen Sophia!
