Hernando High School’s cross country teams are putting together a strong season, highlighted by multiple invitational wins and standout performances from both boys and girls runners.
The boys team claimed the title at the Saltillo Cross Country Invitational, while both the boys and girls earned victories at the Mustang Stampede Invitational and the South Panola High School Invitational.
Head coach Mary Sada Foster, along with assistant coach Lane Carter, said the early success reflects the team’s dedication and preparation.
“Both our boys and girls are working hard and seeing the results,” Foster said.
“We’re proud of how they’ve represented Hernando this season.”
The runners shared some of their pre-race rituals that help them get into the right mindset.
Sophomore Nathan Jenkins, a second-year runner, said warming up and praying is a big part of his routine.
“My pre-race ritual I would definitely say is warming up, and praying is really a big part of the race for me,” Jenkins said.
Sophomore Ren Pillstrom, a fourth-year runner, said she sticks to a familiar routine.
“I usually wear the same workout gear, and I always eat a light breakfast before the meet,” Pillstrom said.
Junior Kyleigh Carter, in her fifth year of cross country, said her ritual starts the night before.
“I always eat the same meal the night before, which is a kids cheese pizza from Buon Cibo,” Carter said.
The team agreed the most challenging course so far this season has been at the Saltillo Invitational, known for its tough hills.
With 1 more meet left in the season, the Tigers will look to build on their early momentum as they continue to chase success at the county championship.
