The long-anticipated Minecraft Movie recently came out in theaters on April 4th. The movie had people selling out auditoriums and ticket lines were out the door.
But what is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a 2011 sandbox game developed and published by Swedish video game developer Mojang Studios. Originally created by Markus “Notch” Persson using the Java programming language, the first public alpha build was released on 17 May 2009. Afterwards, Persson left Mojang and gave Jens “Jeb“ Bergensten control over development. In the years since its release, it has been ported to several platforms, including smartphones, tablets, and various video game consoles. In 2014, Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property were purchased by Microsoft for US$2.5 billion. Minecraft is a game where children and adults alike can go and put their creative minds to work–It contains blocks, creatures, and community.
A Minecraft Movie is nothing short of silly, fun, and made solely for a good time.
One of the things about the movie that stuck out to me was the growing bromance between Steve and Garrison. It was enjoyable to watch it bloom throughout the movie, and their friendship is something that everyone should strive to have.
Jack Black (Steve), as expected, brings his signature over-the-top energy, but it works. Most of the time, his wild antics are a perfect fit for the tone of the movie, and it’s hard not to laugh out loud at his physical comedy. He’s the kind of character who isn’t afraid to push boundaries and go big, and that’s exactly what you want in a movie like this.
Jason Momoa (Garrison), on the other hand, is a perfect fit for the role of Gari. His character is frustratingly lovable. He’s the kind of person you can’t help but root for, even as he drives you crazy. Momoa brings his signature charm and humor to the role, making it clear that he’s having the time of his life on set.
Besides the silliness and lighthearted themes, “A Minecraft Movie” has been a big hit at the box office, earning a $313.7M worldwide despite only being out for a few days.
To parents who are worried about the contents of the film, ease your fears. The movie is rated PG, and that rating feels just right. There’s no language to worry about, the violence is slapstick and cartoonish and the jokes are innocent but still land with a good punch. So, grab some popcorn, sit back, turn your brain off, and let “A Minecraft Movie” do its job: keep you and the family entertained for a while.
