Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson wearing a Fanny Pack
Fanny packs have been taking the world by storm for many years. Even though there are ancient origins, the fanny pack we know today was first seen in 1954 as a leather pouch for skiers to wear. However, these pouches are not credited to the creation of the fanny pack. It wasn’t until 1962 that an Australian widow, Melba Stone, designed a waistbag modeled after a kangaroo pouch. They were given the name fanny pack since they were typically worn around the waist above a person’s behind. The title “fanny” comes from the American slang term of fanny for one’s backside. By the 1980s, these little bags were on a high rise in popularity. The 80’s was a time period of fun colors and patterns layered together, making these little bags an easy staple item for any outfit. Whether you use them for fashion or outdoor activities, these bags have set a trend.
Nowadays, there are so many types of fanny packs that have evolved from the original pouch. There are the classic waist bags, smaller bags that are worn on the hip, and larger bags you can sling over your shoulder. Modern companies have begun to put their own spin on the fanny pack. Designer brands like Gucci, Prada, Kate Spade, and Louis Vuitton have all created their own. Lululemon has made, possibly, the most popular fanny pack in today’s world. Even if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, you can still rock a fanny pack. Walmart and other stores have made cheap fanny packs of all sizes and colors for everybody to enjoy. These versatile bags can be worn many different ways. You can wear it like a classic fanny pack around your waist, a crossbody bag, or a small handbag over your shoulder.
These bags have more use than just multiple ways to be worn. They can be used to carry small items like cash, cards, and a phone. Some workplaces have their employees use fanny packs to carry their personal items or company walkie-talkies. There are companies that make fanny packs for new mothers to easily carry around necessary items for their infant. Most fanny packs are worn while hiking or cycling. They can also be used to carry medical supplies like EpiPens or medications.
International Fanny Pack Day is typically celebrated on the second Saturday of March each year. This year the day was celebrated on March 8th. It’s a holiday that honors the practicality of fanny packs and giving to food banks to end local hunger. This holiday was created by Idaho citizen, Nick Yates. The story behind the creation was when Yates carried around a fruitcake in his fanny pack and gave it to a homeless man. The easiest way to celebrate this national day is to wear your pack or even buy a new one. However, filling up a fanny pack with nonperishable food items and donating them to a local food bank is another way to celebrate the holiday.
