This past Saturday, December 7, 2024, the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) hosted its highly anticipated annual art show in the Hernando High School Commons, drawing a large crowd of students, teachers, and families. The event was a showcase of incredible student talent and creativity, with artwork from a variety of mediums displayed for all to admire. The show featured everything from stunning paintings to intricate ceramics, and attendees were captivated by the diversity of art forms presented.
The range of submissions was truly impressive. Students contributed their work in various categories such as pottery, drawings, graphic art, and photography, offering a glimpse into the many creative skills at Hernando High School. There were also unique handmade pieces, including crocheted items and custom clothing and accessories. One of the standout creations was a one-of-a-kind custom-made jacket, designed by a student, along with a beautifully crafted purse that left a lasting impression on all who saw them.
In addition to the visual art pieces, the atmosphere was electric as students discussed their creative processes and the inspiration behind their works. The NAHS members, who organized the show, did an amazing job of bringing everything together. They created an event that was truly one-of-a-kind at Hernando High School.
Because of this, the Spanish Honor Society, Interact Club, and Key Club decided to provide refreshments for all of the thirsty art showgoers. While browsing the many art pieces, people enjoyed the soothing sound of the Hernando Choir singing many different Christmas carols. At the same time, Mr.Beech played the piano to create a sweet-sounding melody.
Nathan Marshall was one of the many artists involved in this event. He was the creator of this painting called X.
Marshall said, “I wanted to make something with texture.” He took inspiration from Coco Chanel, a “timeless and classic” artist. Coco Chanel was a French fashion designer and businesswoman. She founded the famous brand Chanel. She was known for her couture clothing style. This helped him create his “cute and elegant” piece of art.
Another artist featured in the gallery was Emily Zamarron. Her piece, which had no name, was a plate made by hand. It consisted of two shades of brown with hieroglyphics inspired by her Mexican heritage. She says it ties into her theme about being oneself in a different culture.” want to help others understand her culture” she stated.
If you were to walk past the art gallery and into the library, you would have encountered the History Fair. Mrs. Hicks showcased some of the students’ award-winning posters two months before they travel to Columbus, Mississippi for their North Half History Fair. Hernando High School is a back-to-back state champ. Some of the boards featured were Gabby Walker’s “Love Under Conditional Ties”, and “Potato Problems: Laws and the Irish Potato Famine”. Mrs. Hicks said she is looking forward to winning for the third time in a row. If you are looking, to attend it will be at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi on February 8th, 2025.
This art show was not just an opportunity to display art, but a celebration of the many ways in which students express themselves through their creativity. The event was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, and it truly highlighted the importance of art education in fostering individual talent and creativity. It was an event like no other at Hernando High School, and one that will likely be remembered for years to come.
