To celebrate the upcoming Christmas season, Hernando held an annual tradition at the square. Hernando Dickens of a Christmas was a festival for all to enjoy on November 8th, 9th, and 10th. There, they recreated a Victorian-era atmosphere where could partake in a Christmas farmers’ market, Christmas caroling, historian crafts, and more.The festival held a kick-off for the Dickens of a Christmas that Friday, November 8th, where they invited everyone to join in for a weekend filled with holiday cheer. The festival was hosted by The City of Hernando and presented by Principle Toyota of Hernando. Several events were located around the square this evening. On Panola Street, ice skating was free and ready to enjoy. The rink was made out of artificial ice, so cold-weather gear was not needed. The rink also offered free ice skate rentals and trainers for small children needing assistance.
To show their Christmas spirit, the city held a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the square for the people of Hernando to see. The Mayor of Hernando, Chip Johnson, held a story time in front of the tree after. Here, he read stories to people of all ages so they could sit back and relax while hearing Christmas tales.
To finish off the night, a holiday movie was played on the square. Visitors were welcome to join in to watch a free screening of The Santa Clause. Coffee Central Squared sold on-site hot cocoa, coffee, and other treats for the movie-goers.
On Saturday, November 9th, most events were held throughout the day.
The Hernando Farmers Market returned with their Christmas market for a day of jolly cheer. They had a variety of fall produce and other local foods such as fresh beef, pork, lamb, honey, jams & jellies, sweet and artisinal breads, canned and baked goods, and hand-crafted items. There were various local and far-away vendors to showcase and sell their goods.
The Opera Christmas Carolers performed enchanting Christmas carols at the high tea at noon, and around the square afterward, for people to enjoy music that brought the holiday spirit to life.
The festival had a variety of crafts for all ages to partake in. Desoto Arts Council and teacher, Drucilla Creates, taught the class how to paint reindeer. The Hernando Civic Garden Club hosted another fun workshop inside the courthouse where patrons decorated their own Christmas wreaths. There were plenty more crafts and activities to enjoy despite the rain.
On Sunday, November 10th, the Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce held a Christmas Open House to kick off the holiday season. Local merchants participated in Hernando’s biggest shopping weekend of the year, offering special sales to entice customers into their stores.
Dickens of a Christmas has continued to grow over the years attracting people from all across the region. The city hopes to continue the growth of this event for years to come.
